ANIEKAN UKO :SOARING HIGHER IN LEGISLATIVE BUSINESS
Devoid of the matrix, the intrigues and the gimmicks, a fine legislator is always a beauty to the very people he represents and his nation in general.
Pardon my grammatical coinage, after all,the much talked about vision 2020 must herald some bizarre construct. Stricto senso.
The beauty of the legislature in any part of the globe is not the aesthetics of the edifice (If that was the case, the beauty of NASS in Abuja would have turned all the lawmakers voiceless)but the robust engagement on the floor by the lawmakers on issues bordering on the well being of their constituents.
Akwa Ibom State legislature has not been found wanting of such men since the advent of this nascent democratic government in 1999.
From the Jack Udota”s of Eket ,the Usenobong Akapbio”s of Uruan Inyang Atakpo ,the Obong Nsibidi Chief Ukata of Ini ,the Sam Ikon”s of Etinan ,the Onofiok Luke”s of Nsit Ubium ,the Charles Mbon”s of the Ikot Abasi/Eastern obolo and others, Akwa Ibom has been tremendously blessed with men that has made lawmaking a robust engagement.
Without rigour to verbal excesses,my lenses for this piece, caught the fancy of one man that has in the language of the revered Osondu Ahirika been the guitar boy of the 6th and 7th Assembly,Rt.Hon.(Elder) Aniekan Nyong Uko, FCIA.
In the eyes of avid watchers, like him or not,the Ibesikpo Asutan State Constituency representative has so far given a commendable account of himself in the legislative business.
He made his first debut in the Hallowed Chamber of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly on Tuesday the 8th Day of June,2015 and by providence and acceptability of his colleagues, he broke the jinx of the Speakership by being the first, first timer to occupy the exalted seat which he relinquished due to the appeal court ruling annulling his election. For want of time ,the rest is now history.
To further prove his acceptability by his people,he won unanimously in his re-election making his way again to the seat of his State Constituency.
Critics and sceptics in many quarters doubted his ability to bounce back with quality representation, but on the contrary from the day he took his seat in the floor,he has remained a cerebral voice to the admiration of all who has had the opportunity of listening to his slant on critical issues.
The Ibesikpo Asutan mouth piece has never been intimidated by the majority in baring his mind on issues for the general good of the people.
Hear him on”PROPERTY CHARGE BILL”
“My aspiration to represent my people in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly was driven by conscience and by the grace of God Almighty I have been able to allow that conscience to guide me in the bills and motions I sponsor in the floor of this house and also in my general contributions in whatever is brought before me in this Hallowed Chamber and even in the committee I serve.
Thank God is not an Executive Bill. I will not support any form of revenue generation that will be detrimental to the people of Akwa Ibom State who took pains under the hot sun to elect us to speak and take decisions on their behalf…My mandate was on trust and I won’t sacrifice it”.
It was a million dollar submission that turned he eyes of other States to Akwa Ibom due to the controversy the bill generated. Again, the rest is history.
Elder Aniekan Uko has remained a strong advocate that the country (Nigeria) should strengthen the various component for proper administration.
Hear him on” TRUE FEDERALISM”
“Federalism should be the distribution of power in government between a central authority and the constituents, but in Nigeria, the case is the reverse, the concentration of power and control is at the centre which is the federal unit.
Therefore in my overview,,our country” s system of government is not controlled by two levels of government, it therefore means there is no relationship and without a good relationship, there can be no covenant”.
He is known by his colleagues for being dogged and undaunted on issues he feels convinced that is of benefit to the people. He has always wine and dine with superior argument in any legislative engagement.
Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko has remained a strong stabilizer of the home front by living in the village with his people even as we speak. And methinks that must have triggered his advocacy for the”Bring Back our Language”which he championed on the floor.
Hear Him on “A MOTION ON THE NEED TO MAKE THE TEACHING OF OUR NATIVE LANGUÀGE COMPULSORY IN BOTH PUBLIC AND PRIVATE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS.IN AKWA IBOM STATE”.
” There is no gain saying the fact that recently, there is this gradual depreciation of interest in the speaking of our native language especially within the younger generation.
It has become so bad that if steps are not taken,in no distant time, our native language will go into extinction with the passing away of the old folks.
It was an apt motion, following the fact that the State government immediately mandated primary and Secondary schools to make the teaching of the Ibibio language compulsory in their curriculum. As we speak, the idea has yielded so much positive fruit in our school and homes.
Aniekan Uko”s advocacy for the immortalization of Chief E.O.Eyo (a.k.a EYO UYO),Obong Sampson Udoidiong, Obong Victor Attach and others is still very fresh in the minds of Akwa Ibomites who swallowed the idea hook, line and sinker. It is no hidden news that the State airport has been named after the chief advocate of resource control, Obong Victor Attah.
Uko’s acumen and dexterity in the legislature has not gone unnoticed .He was in 2016 honoured with”DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD“by the People’s Democratic Party, Akwa Ibom State Chapter. In 2016,Pan African Social Policy Reformation,Kenya, found him to be the Best Legislator on CONSTITUENCY EMPOWERMENT.
He overcame the critical eyes of the Fourth Estate of the Realm, the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ)Akwa Ibom State Council when he carted home the prestigious BEST LEGISLATOR OF THE YEAR AWARD 2016.
Just last week,Assembly Watch (AWA),a watchdog magazine of the Hallowed Chamber found him again worthy as the BEST LEGISLATOR for the year 2019.
The Ibesikpo Asutan,Mbikpong Ikot Edim born political Administrator has to the admiration of all, lived up to his billing in the 6th and present 7th Assembly and as the cotton for the 2020/legislative year unfolds today, there is absolutely no doubt that he will still be on song and sustain the tempo.
At least for today,we will be opportune again to hear”Mr. Speaker, this is Aniekan Uko, Ambassador plenipotentiary, reporting for duty”.
